VAPA Building For more than 60 years the Department of Veterans Affairs has sponsored a leading research enterprise. This intramural program has supported activities that have resulted in significant scientific and healthcare advances, improving the health and quality of life not only for our nation's veterans but also of all Americans.

Here at VA Palo Alto Health Care System we support a vigorous research community. Our annual support for approximately 150 principal investigators engaged in more than 600 ongoing projects exceeds $50 million. Funding is derived from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the NIH, other federal agencies, numerous voluntary health agencies and pharmaceutical sponsors. We support basic and clinical research. The VA Palo Alto Health Care System research program consists of all components of VA research and includes an active Biomedical Laboratory R&D program, a Cooperative Studies Program Coordinating Center, a Health Services R&D Center of Excellence for Health Care Evaluation, as well as a Health Services R&D Health Economics Resource Center, and a Rehabilitation R&D Center of Excellence on Bone and Joint Rehabilitation. In addition, the VA Palo Alto Health Care system also supports aging and mental health research through its Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center and its Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center.
